CANBERRA — Viet Nam and Australia have agreed to lift their relationship to a comprehensive partnership in the interest of their people and for the prosperity of each country, contributing to peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and globally.

The agreement was reached during high-level talks in Canberra yesterday between Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and visiting General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nong Duc Manh.

The two leaders affirmed their determination to deepen the relationship between Viet Nam and Australia through maintaining reciprocal visits at all levels and further co-operation and consultation at ministerial and sectorial levels.

Rudd and Manh agreed to increase economic and trade co-operation, especially in mining, processing and light industries and financial and banking services, and to create favourable conditions for their businesses to invest in each other’s countries.

They also pledged to work closely to implement projects using Australia’s official development assistance (ODA) in Viet Nam.
